About the artist and the edition

Olaf Hajek (born 1965) is among the best-known and most sought-after illustrators in the world. He has created illustrations for the New York Times, the Guardian and SZ-Magazin, designed a postage stamp for the British Crown, illustrated a book for Little Gurus and devised advertising campaigns for a Swedish chocolate brand. Next to his commissioned work, all of which Hajek creates using acrylic paint while living in Berlin, he is increasingly dedicating himself to painting on a freelance basis. His style is unique: With a repertoire of colours and forms that knows no limits, Hajek conjures up dreamlike, exotic worlds in which birds and insects congregate, snakes and human bodies intertwine and women don wondrous floral arrangements. With this edition exclusively created for Artflash, we may marvel at the enchanting beauty of a woman with lavish hair, a long neck and a richly adorned forehead. In front of her face, she holds a vibrantly coloured bird-of-paradise flower, spanning colours from ochre to red, from purple to bright blue. In that way, “Flower” recalls the colourful exuberance of the Impressionists, such as that of Paul Gauguin, yet exhibits complete timelessness — simply enticing!
